Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Andrew Brash returned a hero to Calgarians. His first found him within 187 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. One year later, Min Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Mt Everest to finish what he had started.

Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Chomolungma. More than 3003 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

Sherchan just 24 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Chomolungma or Mount Everest. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Mount Everest is shared by two countries. Further, he was all too aware of the potential dangers the Mount Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused Now that Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. “Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. This year Anthony Loeff the European alpinist is reporting the scales for Everest after reaching the peak of Mont Blanc earlier this season.

However, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Min Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over Chomolungma or Mount Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. The 74-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Mt Everest. Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on the Mount Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit.

Don’t leave the dock without it

When you pack your gear bag, your checklist probably includes the usual gear and emergency equipment, mask, fins, regulator and one of those kits with a few extra o-rings, neoprene patches and regulator mouthpieces. Here are a few extra things that you can throw into your gear bag that will make your dive more comfortable, confident, and safe.
Citrus beverages
When I surface, the first thing I want to do is get the taste of ocean out of my mouth. As much as I appreciate the smell of the sea and the salty air, I’m not so enthusiastic about having it on my tongue. Water is refreshing, but I find that I can drink a few liters of bottled water and still taste the remnants of the sea in my mouth.

After experimenting with dozens of beverage candidates, I find that Five Alive is hands-down the best cure for oceanmouth. Other citrus juices are good, but none are quite as effective as Five Alive. The better ones were those that contain acidic juices like pineapple and grapefruit.

The juice serves another purpose: rehydration. It seems counterintuitive that spending an hour submerged in water can cause dehydration, but it’s true. The air in your tanks is very dry - necessarily so, since moisture in a tank will rust it from the inside. Just breathing in that dry air for an hour will silently dehydrate you. Drink something when you get back to the boat and you can avoid the symptoms of dehydration such as headache, nausea and dizziness.
Long-sleeved rashgard or cotton shirt
Did you know that the chemicals in sunscreen are poisonous to reef-dwelling marine life? You need to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation, but you don’t want to slather on the SPF lotion before your dive. Cover up the old fashioned way with a cotton shirt or a long-sleeved rashguard.
Laminated Dive Table Chart
Are you dependent on your computer? Go back and review your certification training and learn how to calculate your residual nitrogen using tables. Computers are great tools, but it behooves every diver to remember how to manage their nitrogen levels without gadgetry.
A “dry bag”
A dry bag needn’t be anything fancy - inexpensive bags with resealable flaps are available at most camping or marine supply stores. They don’t need to be watertight to 100 ft - since you leave them on the boat in your gear bag. My favorite is a bright yellow, rubber bag with a top that folds over three times and tucks into itself for an easy watertight seal. Many divers on a budget will use a variety of disposable resealable freezer bags.

In my dry bag, I keep:

•Tissues - a necessity. After purging my mask a few times, my sinuses get rebellious.
•Cotton Swabs - some gentle attention to get the water out of my ears.
•A photocopy of my identification & passport - just in case
•Band-aids - because I stub my toes on boats
•Everything that was in my pockets - Before donning my wetsuit, my dry bag (by virtue of its sealability) is a good place to keep a cell phone, camera, wallet, jewelry, car keys, etc.
Tell someone where you are going and who you’re with.
Make this a habit, so you don’t need to be concerned when an emergency arises.

First, make sure the dive operator knows who you are, where you are staying, and who to contact in case of an emergency. If you are injured during a dive, the dive operators might whisk you directly to the nearest hospital, medical clinic or decompression chamber. If the medical staff can’t determine your identity, it can complicate your medical attention.

Second, tell someone who isn’t diving with you where you are going. That could be others in your party, the hotel concierge, or a phone call to a relative back home. Tell them the name of the dive shop, your destination, the departure time and estimated return time for your dive excursion. If you know it, include the names of the boat, its captain, and divemaster. If you are traveling alone or diving in a group, write the information down and leave it with the hotel office. If your hotel is near a popular diving spot, they will be used to that sort of thing.

Fantasy football league enthusiasts play for different reasons. Some play for pride, while others play for money. Some fantasy football league members play for mega money, though, and the money is all these fantasy football nuts care about. Witness these two amazing fantasy football leagues.

A fantasy football league in Las Vegas pits players from 12 different leagues in a World Championship Fantasy Football league. These guys compete for a grand prize of $200,000. Other huge monetary prizes are handed out as well. This quest to be a fantasy football league world champion illustrates what this game does to people.

Further witness a differend kind of fantasy football league. In The League, first-ever published work of fiction based on a fantasy football league, sixteen wealthy, powerful men from Wall Street, create a unique fantasy football league. This remarkable group plays for a winner-take-all fantasy football league championship trophy of $30 million.

The idea for The League was born from conversations between the author and other fantasy football league participants who believe that the lust for power and money can get out of hand, if people are not careful. Fantasy football makes a great vehicle for this hunger for money.

The League is a fictional work that has been called a cautionary tale about what can happen, if fantasy football league enthusiasts are not careful to keep their competition and desire for prize money in check. Anyone participating in a fantasy football league can learn a great deal about how the game can get out of control by reading about a fictional fantasy football league in the novel, The League.

Teaching Your Boy the Game

For those who “coach your son” (or those players who are coached
by Dear Old Dad), lend me your ears. Here are some quick and
easy thoughts to answer the common problems that surround
coaching your own kid.

1st & Foremost Help him become the best player that He wants to
be. When it becomes more about You, the coach, the player’s Dad
. . . rethink immediately because you just became ONE OF THEM!
You know the guy who’s son plays shortstop and pitches, he bats
3rd . . . always . . . and probably shouldn’t . . . yes, there
are worse things to be than a pushy baseball Dad . . . so the
good news is . . . it’s curable! But seriously . . . think about
this . . .

2nd Consider the reality of the above and understand that you
probably would treat discipline and talk to your own boy
differently than you will with the other 12 kids on your team.
So when you need to discipline ANY of your team attempt to do
this “evenly” and with the same methods. This may take practice
as well as having a pre-season discussion with your boy, as he
knows Dad and just may attempt to take advantage (I know . . .
not my boy!). REVISIT #1 . . . lol. Along with this thought is
the idea of playing time and position play. On all teams there
are weak links and positions you just cannot find a player to
fill. It’s a common problem especially at the younger level up
to around age 13.

Here’s my own experience. I have coached my son through many
levels, from Tee Ball on up. One year we didn’t have a catcher,
so he played catcher a lot when not pitching. At the next level,
a player I counted on for a lot of pitching left a hole at short
and yet another season, a hole at 2nd. My first reaction each
year was the same . . . teach my son the essentials of these
positions . . . as long as he understood that he would be
helping the team, and me as well. Confiding in him how I was
proud of him to make the sacrifice didn’t hurt either.

3rd Is it easy? Not every day. Know this now! Why should it
always have to be easy? Very few things that are important to
two people are always easy. Know that you are each other’s
favorite coach and favorite player. Nothing is more important
than that!

Here’s the Downside: Your boy won’t progress quite as quickly in
what you may see as his “natural position.”

Here’s the Upside: Until approximately age 14 he doesn’t have a
natural position. He has ability and interest in his “natural
position” and he has Dad hoping he will play and excel at his
“natural position.” But unless any boy gets experience all over
the field, he may not truly find that “natural position.”

My son had as much fun as a catcher throughout his 11-12-13
years as any time I ever saw him play another position . . . for
whatever his reasons were. His experience there was due to his
team’s needs. It ended up allowing him to learn and do something
he never really thought much about or had much interest in. It
also helped me out of a jam because he got good at it. And yes,
he enjoyed it! It also helped our pitchers because he improved
where they could count on him . . . and now, as an older player,
it allowed him to understand the game infinitely better, now
that he is developing into a pitcher and a solid middle
infielder.

Ultimately, all it took was he and I initially discussing it (I
asked for and frankly needed his help - I truly believe that
kids like to help), and secondly I spent time working with him
at home, one-on-one, and at the park, which gave us time for
just he and I! That time is worth it just by itself. . . the
added benefit is that it was time spent at a baseball field!

Under the category of “never say never,” my son’s High School
asked him to play shortstop on the JV summer team a few years
ago. He regarded it as quite an honor, as he was only an 8th
grader in a school of 2,000 students. Although he certainly had,
and has, a lot of learning to do at such a complex position…I
think he was extremely happy that he was at least forced out of
his “natural position” earlier in his career and could call on
past game experiences. It certainly made for a more confident
and enjoyable transition!

Disc Golf, also known as Frisbee Golf, is a simple sport that almost anyone can enjoy. Disc Golf has taken off in popularity in the last few years, since it requires relatively inexpensive equipment and most everyone has experience throwing a Frisbee. Combine that with fact that most courses are free and have beautiful surroundings, and you have an inexpensive outdoor sport that can provide hours of entertainment for the whole family.

Courses can be found just about everywhere these days and generally consist of 9, 18 or 24 holes. The “holes” are actually baskets with hanging chains to slow & secure an incoming disc. On an average course these holes can be anywhere from 150 to 500 feet apart, and have water hazards to make things interesting. A bad throw could result in a lost disc unless you are prepared to do a little swimming.

Discs can cost between $8-$20, so they are easy to replace, and come in three basic types. The driver is normally a harder disc that you can rocket off the tee. But be careful, because a misfire can result in a long walk. The putter is a softer disc made to grab the chains of the basket from a shorter distance. In between these two you have your midrange discs that can vary in weight and flight style.

At Winter Park Resort you can find an 18-hole course that is located at the top of Winter Park Mountain. At nearly 11,000 feet you have spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, and can enjoy a nice lunch on the wraparound deck of the Sunspot. Discs can be rented at the base of the mountain and you must ride the scenic chair lift to the top, unless you are up for a little hike.

Course Information:
Holes: 18
Tee Type: Dirt
Course Length: 9655
Average Length: 536.39
Holes Under 300′: 3
Holes Between 300′ to 400′: 4
Holes Over 400′: 11
