How Does Online Pharmacies Affect Pharmacy Leaders?

With cheaper drugs made available online, big pharmacy companies are losing control of their monopolistic control over the pharmacy industry. They are not able to compete with these online pharmacies with their exorbitant drug prices. FDA moves in and tries to protect these companies from online pharmacies by trying to censor online information from users. What FDA does not know about the internet is: nobody controls internet and the spread of information over the web. Even major search engines like Google have no control over the use of information on the web. Google protects and encourages free speech on the web and that is why searching online for products is so good- you can find anything online these days. If major pharmaceutical leaders cannot compete with online pharmacies’ prices, they should look to resolving the situation themselves, not use FDA or use political pressures. What good is the internet if certain products are censored?

How Good Can It Get?

Buying medicine online is the way of the future. They do away the need for extensive pharmaceutical company structures and hundreds of drug salesmen stalking hospitals and clinics every day. When comparing online pharmacies and pharmaceutical leaders, it is similar to comparing Toyota and BMW. Online pharmacies work just like Toyota- cheap and more effective. They are safer and better than BMW in many ways while BMW represents the prestige of owning a continental car.

Clearly, we should present cheaper drug alternatives via online pharmacies to internet users as well as brand name drugs. So far, US pharmaceutical industry is infested with drug lords and BMWs, but why can’t there be more online pharmacies and Toyotas?

Contact lenses come in a variety of colors and effects these days. These include basic white contact lenses. Courtesy of the fact that many of these lenses are now created for cosmetic purposes, with a power of 0.00, basic white contact lenses can be made available for all, not just those with poor eyesight.

One must wonder of course, how basic white contact lenses could affect poor vision, and the answer is that they couldn’t of course.

However, at a party, the effect of pure white in one’s eyes could be very striking, if not a little bit scary …..

In a dramatic sense, theatrical contact lenses are used to help portray specific characters, or idiosyncrasies that these characters may possess. If a character were blind, then having basic white contact lenses could have a significant effect on the portrayal of that character. Having said that, basic white contact lenses will have a ‘pupil hole’ which would show up as a black dot in the eye. Without this hole, you wouldn’t be able to see anything of course.

Taking this theme a bit further, it is possible to get other color lenses which give an ‘all out’ effect. By this I mean which are made of a solid color, with only the pupil hole showing. These solid color lenses are available in colors such as silver, black, red, yellow and violet. Again the effects of these types of lenses would be considered theatrical in nature, or perhaps used to add an effect for a night out.

Charlie Cory is the owner of a web site dedicated to special effects contact lenses.

Paul Offit, MD: Review of his book “The Cutter Incident”

Vaccines do so much good in the world, how come we don’t like them more? This question is answered in this book by Dr. Paul OffitDr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease specialist and vaccine expert. Dr. Offt traces the origin of today’s antipathy to vaccines to a horrendous incident during the 1950s in which thousands of people received polio vaccine containing live poliovirus.

Offit describes the development of polio vaccine, from trials of early vaccines through to the appearance on the scene of Jonas Salk. In 1951 Dr. Jonas Salk’s vaccine was licensed quickly thanks to political pressure, and during the next two weeks, five companies distributed about five million doses. Then came the problem: Thirteen days after the first doses were administered, there were reports of cases of polio in immunized children. All of these initial cases had received vaccine manufactured by one company-Cutter Laboratories). In the end, at least 220 000 people were infected with live poliovirus in Cutter’s vaccine (including 100 000 contacts of immunized children), 70 000 developed muscle weakness, 164 were severely paralyzed, and 10 died.

How did live viruses get into the vaccine?

Dr. Offit exlains in detail. The reasons included the use of a highly virulent strain (Mahoney), deficiencies in the inactivation of vaccine virus, inadequate safety tests, and poor communication with other scientists and the government. However, Cutter Laboratories was not negligent. It was doing all that the licensing authority required of it. Sixty lawsuits were subsequently filed. The first resulted in a verdict that “affected all pharmaceutical companies for the next fifty years.” The jury found that Cutter was not negligent in producing the vaccine, but had breached an implied warranty that their product was safe. The concept of liability without fault was born. In other words, companies were responsible for the effects of their products even when they were not negligent in their design or manufacture. Paul Offit goes on to reveal the large number of successful lawsuits that arose from this precedent. These led to the 1986 National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, designed to protect companies from lawsuits not supported by scientific evidence. But the damage was already done. Despite the government program, pharmaceutical companies are abandoning vaccines. In 1957, 26 companies made five vaccines in the United States. By 2004 four companies made 12 vaccines. As a result vaccines costs more and development of new vaccines is slowed. In addition to being an acclaimed scientist and physician, Paul Offit is a good writer and The Cutter Incident is an enjoyable read, at times like a detective thriller, at others like a courtroom drama. The Cutter Incident tells and important story and tell its well. There can be no argument that vaccines have been a great benefit to humankind. This book shows how close we have come to putting one of our most effective public health tools in jeopardy.

Paul Kraus is a mesothelioma survivor and the author of
Surviving Mesothelioma and Other Cancers.

Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated
with previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant
(cancerous) cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective
lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs. Its most
common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest
cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of
the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds
the heart).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where
they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to
asbestos dust and fibre in other ways, such as by washing the
clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, or by home
renovation using asbestos cement products.

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 50 years
after exposure to asbestos.

Characterized by a shortness of breath and pain in the chest due
to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space, this is often
symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and
cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a buildup
of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal
mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting
abnormalities, anemia, and fever.

If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts
of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or
swelling of the neck or face. Be aware, however, that these
symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious
conditions. Obtaining a diagnosis of mesothelioma is often
difficult, because the symptoms are similar to those of a number
of other, less serious conditions.

In June 1997, Mr. Kraus was diagnosed with mesothelioma (a
“terminal” cancer) and given only a few months to live. More
than eight years later, he is alive with a good quality of life
having rejected surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. He took an
alternative approach to healing his cancer that encompassed
mind, body, and spirit.

In his book about mesothelioma, Kraus sets out how he beat the
odds. The introduction reflects Paul’s inspiration and
committment to life:

“In my eighth year after diagnosis I remain well. I have
outlived my prognosis by at least seven years and the medical
specialist I visited not long ago told me that ‘you will be
around for a lot longer yet.’ My survival has been hard work.
The underlying assumption with all that I have done, and
continue to do, is a strong belief that our bodies are designed
with amazing self-healing capacities.”

Mr. Kraus has made himself available to other patients who would
like to speak with him. The Surviving Mesothelioma website
provides details about the book, how to speak directly with Mr.
Kraus, facts and statistics about mesothelioma, conventional,
alternative, biological and immuno-therapies, the latest medical
news, directories of clinics that take a holistic approach to
healing, and a patient forum where patients can share
information and discuss issues of importance.

In this world we don’t have to afraid to anybody except to
only one. Who is it? Where is it?

It is nowhere else. But it is within us.

It witnesses all our action and speech.

We cannot do anything without its knowledge.

It is none other and it is our conscience.

When human beings commit wrong they can escape from the
punishment in the absence of witnesses from the court of
law.

But they cannot escape from the judge built within their body, where witnesses could not fail.

We might have seen or read in newspaper and television, “A man who committed a murder has

surrendered in the police station.”

Who instigated him to surrender?

Definitely he would not have surrendered because of somebody’s instigation.

The prime instigator for his surrender should have been his
conscience.

His conscience never let him to sleep unless he surrender or accept the crime he has committed.

It will constantly pinch him to surrender.

His conscience will keep quiet only after it drove him to surrender.

If we are sincere to our conscience it will reflect in our action and speech.

We might face some difficulties while we are sincere, at the same time our conscience will give

us the strength and show us the ways and means to tackle those problems.

At the end we will come out with flying colors.

We should always sincere to our conscience as a responsible citizen, father, mother, husband,

wife, son or daughter, employer, employee, service provider, etc.,

We need not fear to any body if we are sincere to our conscience and everything will happen in

favor of us.

If we are sincere to our conscience it will create all circumstances for the welfare of our life.

Therefore be sincere to your conscience, and you will get all prosperity.

Two recently published articles confirm the immune actions of Agaricus blazei Murill against viruses. The Agaricus blazei Murill (ABM) mushroom, known as the “Sun Mushroom” and as “Cogmelo de Deus” (”Mushroom of God”), is native to Brazil and has become known for its medicinal properties. ABPC (Agaricus Blazei Practical Compound), which is the mushroom treated by digestive enzyme offered by Obiken, can be found in the Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR).

An extract of Agaricus blazei Murill protected against systemic Streptococcus pneumoniae 6B infection in the mice. The authors concluded that these results suggest that Agaricus blazei Murill extract may be useful as additional prophylactic and possibly therapeutic treatment against bacterial and possibly other infections in humans. [1]

Co-administration of an extract of Agaricus blazei Murill with foot-and-mouth disease virus antibody increased the specific immune response against the virus and T cell proliferation in mice. [2]

Agaricus blazei Murill is rich in polysaccharides, such as beta-glucan, which have been shown to vitalize the immune system. The beta-glucans have been shown to have potent anti-tumor activity in mice. Beta(1-3)D-glucan, such as schizophyllan, has been used clinically in cancer therapy in Japan.

The method know as three dimensional ultrasound is used during early pregnancy, providing 3 d pictures of the fetus. Most of the time these pictures are rapidly captured and joined together and made into a movie to created a 4d ultrasound scan.

Three dimensional scans works in a similar way to the usual ultrasound methods except that the ultrasound scanning pulses can be sent from multiple directions. The ultrasound pulses are redirected back and captured and provide information to construct a 3-dimensional picture in in the same way as 3d pictures. 3 dimesional ultrasound was devised in the usa.

It’s important to understand that sonologists around the world always conjured 3d pictures of the body in their minds while doing 2d scans. However, until recently it was almost impossibel to do this kind of reconstruction on on patient information using ultasound scanning. The advent of 4d scans for the first time allowed us a view into the thinking of a sonologist and allowing us to reconstruct the images on the ultrasound machine.

The 3d/4d ultrasound image should utilize ultrasound energy following the same limits as conventional 2d ultrasound to create the 3d images. There is no data to suggest harm due to 3d ultrasound, its use in non-medical situations needs to be undertaken with the understanding of the risks.

Once upon a time, living with wear-and-tear from age and neglect was an unavoidable reality in the mouths of maturing adults.

Reversing what nature had wrought was an indulgence. Only the rich, the famous, the vain eccentric were exempt. And so older folks accepted the slow degenerationyellow, worn-down nubs and dark gaps from teeth ravaged by disease and decay. Even function suffered. Biting an apple, articulate speech were other possible problems.

Enter the restorative power of modern dentistry!

“Now the dental arsenal easily vanquishes the common enemies of oral health,” says Dr. Sherman H. Telis, of the Washington Center for Dentistry in Washington, DC. “The marvels of gum therapy, crowns, bridges, veneers and implants have the power to restore what used to be an accepted part of aging of the mouth.”

Restorative dentistryoften coupled with cosmetic dentistryis now the province of the average dental consumer. Patients are seeking treatment for rehabbing swollen gums, rejuvenating unsightly broken teeth and filling gaps with “new” teeth that get “implanted” into the bone and function and look like natural teeth.

And patients know a lot about treatments from the Internet and the media. “It’s astonishing how much information there is out there for patients,” Dr. Telis says.

Here’s a rundown of restorative options:

Crowns - A new generation of fine-grade porcelain gives crowns an astonishing look of real teeth. Mimicking nature’s pearlescent glow and translucency, these crowns are indistinguishable from their natural-born neighbors. And these newer, stronger materials eliminate the need for metal under layers that cast an unsightly dark shadow under the gums. The newer techniques in fashioning crowns also make it possible to fit them more seamlessly into the bite.

Bridges - Today’s strong, beautiful porcelains also make it possible to span the area of a missing toothwith no shiny metal clasps or other tell-tale signs of prosthetic dental treatment.

Implants - This ever-improving advance in modern dentistry is responsible for preserving normal dentition without needing to resort to a partial or full denture that needs to be removed from the mouth at night.
Once an iffy choice, now the implant touts a 97 percent success rate and is increasingly the treatment of choice for replacing missing teeth. And often the result is stronger and more durable than natural teeth.
The process is getting more streamlined, as some implants get placed into the gum and bone the same day, along with a temporary crown. Patients have little inconvenience in their appearance as the process goes forward.

Porcelain “fillings”Also known as composites and inlays or onlays, these restorations are another way to rejuvenate teeth via the wonders of porcelain. The healthy, whiter look makes teeth look young and bright.

Veneers - Few treatments surpass these thin, sculpted shells of porcelain when transforming unattractive, old teeth into a beautiful, natural, younger looking smile. Again, the high-grade porcelains create a lovely, glowing smile that looks absolutely natural.
